When a beautiful new book gets delivered to our desks here at Tyndale, it represents hours of work invested by many people. These people have used their talents and creativity to bring stories to life in printed copy for you—our wonderful readers—to read. 

Typically, we don’t get to see the process of how a cover design makes its way to the bound-book cover. But not long ago, some of us from Tyndale got to visit the location where the cover of the special edition of Francine Rivers’s  book A Lineage of Grace was being created. Since you didn’t get to go with us, we’ve prepared a virtual trip behind the scenes so you can see what we saw that day—how the beautiful cover design was produced. 

If you have a copy of A Lineage of Grace, Special Edition nearby, pick it up and look at the intricate detail on the foil-stamped cover. This stunning image was created through a collaborative process between Tyndale designer Julie Chen and Tyndale artist Lindsey Bergsma, who crafted the illustration. 

The intricate details of the cover artwork had to be transferred to the actual book cover. This was no small feat! Here’s a look at the cover overlay during the process. Think of this overlay as a stencil:

After we observed the cover overlay that you see above, we headed to the center of action to watch the foil-stamping process. Take a peek at the photo below for a glimpse at another template used for the cover: 

While at the printer, we were able to get a behind-the-scenes look at the finished cover of the special edition before it was bound to the book. We got to see the prints below and even bring back a sheet to share at the office. Don’t you just love the artwork? 

As you can see from these behind-the-scenes photos, there’s a lot that must happen for a story to become a printed book complete with an amazing cover. After months of work, A Lineage of Grace, Special Edition now graces our bookshelves with wonderful stories, stunning artistry, and true beauty.
