When Others Judge You or Your Child for Being Different

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous – how I know it. . . . How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! – Psalm 139:13-14, 17 NLT

Blending in with everyone else was never God’s intention for those who believe in him. This world is obsessed with keeping up with what’s normal. Yet throughout the Bible, God asks his people to be different, to be set apart, to be special. Being a special needs parent isn’t a typical parenting journey by any means. Perhaps, though, it is a blessing to never have to wrestle with the illusion of normalcy. You are keenly aware of how your family is special. It can be a tough road to walk; the rhythms and routines of caregiving can create a stressful and exhausting norm. Your God, who calls you to be set apart for him, also provides the strength and patience to walk a different road than those around you. You are precious to God, and he has knit you and your child together in ways that bring him glory. Your goal in this life isn’t to fit in and look like everyone else. You were made to stand out for God’s glory.
