What Our Pets Teach Us About God

What Our Pets Teach Us About God

They greet us at the door when the world has been unkind. They curl up beside us in the dark. They make us laugh when we have no reason to. And according to more than 300 Tyndale Reader Rewards members who responded to our recent pet poll, they point us — quietly, faithfully — toward something bigger than themselves.

We asked our members four questions about the pets in their lives, then opened the floor for one more: What have you learned about God through your pets? The answers were as varied as the animals themselves, and yet they kept circling back to the same word, over and over again: love.

They Feel Like Family — Because They Are

When asked what role their pet has played most often, the most popular answer wasn’t “companion” or “entertainer.” It was family member, chosen by 38% of respondents. That word carries weight. Family member implies permanence, belonging, and the kind of loss that doesn’t need explaining when they’re gone.

Daily entertainment came in second (28%), followed by best friend (15%) and emotional support (14%). Together, these responses tell the same story: pets aren’t accessories. They’re relationships — ones that shape us, sustain us, and leave a mark.

The Comfort That Doesn’t Need Words

Perhaps the most tender question we asked was this: How has your pet comforted you during hard times?

The top answer, from 150 respondents, was offering closeness — the simple, irreplaceable gift of a warm presence when you’re struggling. No words. No advice. Just there.

One respondent named it perfectly: “Words don’t need to be spoken. Comfort can be given by just being there.”

It’s hard not to hear an echo of the Lord in that. The God who promises I will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5) has a way of making Himself known through the creatures He’s placed in our care.

What the Animals Taught Us

The final question was open-ended: What have you learned about God through the pets in your life?

Unconditional love rose to the surface again and again:

“They see you at your worst and still love you unconditionally. They never get tired of being with you. God is the same in that way.”

“Just as we love our pets despite their sometimes questionable behavior, God loves us unconditionally.”

Many reflected on God’s creativity — the wild, delightful variety of the animal kingdom as a window into the mind of the Maker:

“Every pet I’ve ever had has had a completely different personality, even among the same breed and litter. That shows me that God puts care and intention into every living creature He makes.”

Others found lessons in God’s provision and nearness:

“If we can care deeply for animals, imagine how much God cares for us. He cares for the sparrows, and He cares for us much more.”

“God cares about everything we care about.”

And one of the most unexpectedly wise answers in the whole survey:

“Caring for someone is hard. They make mistakes and you know they’re going to mess up, but you scold them, forgive them, and try to teach them better. We humans are like dogs in that way. That is how God has to deal with us also.”

A Gift We Almost Take for Granted

When we asked which pet-related book topic our members would most want to read, the top answer — chosen by 26% — was God’s purpose for animals. That hunger is real. We sense that these creatures aren’t accidental, that their loyalty and their joy and their strange, steadfast love are meant to tell us something.

Maybe the simplest and truest answer came from a respondent who summed it all up in five words:

“They are a gift.”

In the ordinary moments of filling a food bowl, going for an evening walk, or just sitting quietly with a sleeping animal nearby — God is showing off. He is giving us, in small and furry and four-legged form, a glimpse of what it looks like to be loved without condition, known without judgment, and never, ever alone.

Thanks be to God for His indescribable gifts — including the ones with wagging tails.
