Verses for Funerals

The Lord calls his people not to fear death, for he has conquered all. When losing a loved one, it can be difficult to remember the gift of Jesus’ life. Not only did the cross defeat death, but it allowed for Jesus to give us his presence and everlasting peace which comforts us in times of loss.

Read these Bible verses during a season of grieving, remembering God’s promise, and accepting the peace he offers you.

John 11:25

Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.”

Revelation 21:4

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain.”

Romans 14:8

If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:54-57

Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 4:7

Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.

Matthew 5:4

“God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

Psalm 34:18

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

Romans 8:18

Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.

Psalm 73:26

My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.
