Karen Kingsbury talks about Someone Like You and The Baxters

Tyndale author Karen Kingsbury was recently interviewed during Tyndale’s employee chapel service. The #1 New York Times bestselling author talked about two exciting new page-to-screen projects: Someone Like You and The Baxters.

Someone Like You in Theaters

Based on the popular Kingsbury novel, Someone Like You (rated PG) releases in movie theaters on April 2.

Shocking news hits after young architect Dawson Gage loses his best friend, London Quinn. In his heartbreak, Dawson is compelled to launch an impossible search for London’s secret twin sister, the other half of twins separated as embryos. But along the way, Dawson never planned to fall in love.

Karen Kingsbury reflected on her experience writing this achingly beautiful redemptive love story.

“When I write a novel, I see it as a movie first in my head,” Kingsbury said. But her writing goes much beyond entertainment or family gossip. With everything Kingsbury writes, “There is always a pointing back to Christ. That is always going to be the story.” She referred to herself as “an evangelist disguised as a novelist.”

Breaking away from conventional Hollywood norms, the movie was meticulously brought to life and financed by Karen and her family. Karen personally scouted filming locations and appointed her sister as the film’s line producer, among other roles.

Reflecting on this endeavor to bring her story to life, Kingsbury said she felt like she was on “holy ground” when she was making this decision. She was guided by her father’s wisdom, “Life is not a dress rehearsal. You only have one chance.”

Kingsbury and her husband took the leap to make what was once a movie in her mind, into a movie on the big screen. She continued, “We need favor and only [God] could provide it.” And he did.

The Baxters on Amazon Prime

Karen Kingsbury's masterful storytelling has garnered a huge fan base devoted to keeping up with the Baxter Family Drama book series. Now current and new fans can experience the emotional depth and inspirational journey of the beloved characters in a whole new way with The Baxters, a new television series that started streaming on Amazon Prime on March 28, 2024.

When asked about the inspiration for these stories, Kingsbury replied, “It lands on my heart as a gift from God, and I am the stenographer or the first reader.”

The Baxters follows Elizabeth and John Baxter and their five adult children. Season One centers on Elizabeth and John’s daughter Kari, who learns the shocking truth that her professor husband, Tim, has been secretly having an affair with one of his college students. As her relationship is tested, Kari must seek comfort in her faith and family to discover if love is truly a choice and if her marriage can be redeemed.

In this deeply moving faith-based journey, the Baxters must come together as a family to work through the challenges of life. Kingsbury says of the series, “There’s always the real deep themes [which capture] people’s hearts.”

Karen recalled that when her father was still alive, he told her, “The Baxter’s are a hope opera.” A very insightful way to describe this vast and inspirational family drama.
