Foundation Focus: Why God’s Word Must Be Accessible

Foundation Focus: Why God’s Word Must Be Accessible

People have always had a knack for storytelling. And as societies have developed new ways to connect and communicate, we’ve found new ways to tell stories that we believe are worth sharing. Mankind first shared stories and experiences through the passing of oral traditions and histories; then writing systems on tablets and scrolls helped preserve written tales of ancient times. When the printing press was developed in the 15th century, the printed words of books and pages that we know today were made possible for large distribution, forever changing the way we accessed and told our stories (thank you, Johannes Gutenberg). As technology has evolved, our natural desire to tell stories has remained, and we now find ourselves with the ability to distribute stories through digital formats like e-books, audiobooks, and online platforms, which makes reading things like this lovely blog possible.

Humans have always taken steps to make stories and storytelling accessible through the platforms and technology of the day because something in our nature just seems to know that the stories we choose to tell, pass on, and preserve matter deeply.

For many of our partners at Tyndale House Foundation, the ability to print, distribute, and make accessible the greatest story ever told, the gospel story, is foundational in the calling that they live out every day. Through our Literature grantmaking priority, we partner with organizations all over the world doing the work of Bible translation, literature distribution, Christian publishing, and resource development. This can look like anything from contextualizing written curricula, to publishing books and magazines, to making Scripture accessible to people in their heart languages. But all of it plays a role in making God’s Word available to everyone.

This work is at the heart of Tyndale as a company. From the time that Ken and Margaret Taylor first published Living Letters in 1962, Tyndale has operated from a desire to make God’s word understandable to all people. Now, over 60 years later, Tyndale House Publishers and Tyndale House Foundation are still committed to that same desire. We live this out in our mission to minister to the physical and spiritual needs of people around the world through the publishing of literature consistent with biblical principles. We do this through our own work as publishers, and we seek to be good partners to others seeking to provide spiritual edification in a similar way, as we collectively seek to “publish his glorious deeds among the nations” (Psalm 96:3) by telling the stories of what God has done for us and for mankind.

God is doing incredible things around the world through our partners who are committed to making his Word accessible, contextualized, and available, and the publication of Christian literature more broadly is still a vital need today.

This January, we invite you to pray with us for ministries around the world that are working to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to hear the greatest story ever told.

  1. Pray for God’s Word to be available to every person in their heart language.
  2. Pray for sound, biblical literature that makes the gospel come to life in the hearts and minds of readers.
  3. Pray for access to biblical literature, whether physically or digitally, for every person.
  4. Pray for protection and endurance for those ministering through Christian literature in difficult contexts.
  5. Pray for leaders around the world to have the resources they need to minister effectively.

As we continue to pray and partner, we look forward to hearing the stories of life change and transformation that God is still writing in the lives of people all over the world.
