Behind the Scenes of the Printing of Francine Rivers’s new novel, Bridge to Haven

We have something a little special for this month’s What’s Happening Wednesday blog. It’s always interesting to get a sneak peek of any industry. So today we thought we’d invite you into our own secret club and share a behind-the-scenes glimpse from the printing of Bridge to Haven , the latest novel by New York Times bestselling author Francine Rivers.

Because pictures are worth a thousand words, let’s walk through the printing process with some photos that, in my opinion, are stunning.

Did you know that, as with many other products out there (including most technology today), books are produced in parts that are combined together at the end? This assembly line process isn’t a new concept, but it’s definitely not how I imagined a book was made as a little girl—though my active imagination could probably be to blame. 🙂

See these large rolls of paper below? If you were to look closely, you’d see they are in fact large reams that will become the printed pages of the book.

Before you is the hardcover jacket laid out as it appears just after printing. After the ink sets, this will wrap around the hardcover of the book (known to the industry as the case side) to create the final hardcover product you see lining bookshelves.

Speaking of the case side, look at that pretty blue case. If you slip the jacket off the hardcover, this is what you will find.

As mentioned before, the book is printed and manufactured in parts. But did you know that the actual paper within the book is produced in segments as well? Each segment of 16 pages is called a signature. The hardcover of Bridge to Haven , for example, requires 30 signatures to make up the full page count.

And without further ado, the final product:

BridgetoHaven

It’s amazing the journey each book must go through after the words have been written and polished.

What do you think of the process? Did we change any of your perceptions on how a book is assembled?
