“If we want to see God more clearly, we have to be willing to let go of false images when we are given the grace to recognize them for what they are. Human vision, of course, is always impaired. Our deluded hearts mislead us. We only see to the extent that God graciously opens our eyes – the eyes of the blind,” Ann Spangler writes in the introduction of her book, Praying the Attributes of God – A Daily Guide to Experiencing His Greatness. This paperback book is two hundred and thirteen pages, targeted toward Christians who want to learn more about God’s attributes. To be used as a study guide over a seventeen week period, it promotes Biblical teaching from the New Living Translation of the Bible. This reader wishes all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence. Set up as seventeen chapters, the idea is to study and learn about one attribute of God during the work week, with no Sundays or Saturdays included. On Mondays a key Scripture is given with background information and a brief overview of the topic. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, devotional prayers with correlating passages are discussed. Fridays are for reflection of God’s promises with more topical verses and references. Touted as a crash course about God’s attributes, the first week covers His love. Following chapters include characteristics of being good, infinite, unchanging, omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, patient, wise, jealous, righteous, merciful, faithful, holy, creative, and transcendent. As an example, the thirteenth chapter conveys how God leans toward compassion with endless mercy for us, noted in Exodus 34:6. On Monday there are several verses from Exodus, Psalms and Mark with a seven point question guide about receiving God’s mercy and being merciful to others. The next three days’ lessons include reflecting, praising, thanking, confessing, and asking God in different aspects of one’s life in regard to compassion. On each day there are analogies, allegories, or stories by well-known people or the author. Friday concludes that God’s mercies endure forever and lists both Old and New Testament verses to research. Although the book is not a daily devotional, it is more of a study on different attributes of God that can be thought and considered over a week’s time period. By reading this book in conjunction with the Bible and prayer, Christians will be reminded the more we seek God, He will be closer to us.
