Be Still My Soul Growing up in a traditional Methodist church I grew to love hymns and would frequently wonder at the meaning of the words, the origin of the hymn. Hymns and songs contain powerful messages and learning the meaning behind them can make their importance grow. When I opened Be Still My Soul and started reading I knew that I was going to enjoy the time I spent reading. Randy Petersen does a wonderful job of relating the stories behind many of the beloved hymns I grew up hearing and singing. Whether it’s the Christmas favorite Away in a Manger or Be Thou my Vision, which we chose to sing at our wedding, I could keep reading and ignore the pile of laundry sitting waiting to be folded. This collection of 175 hymns is sure to include many that you know and love. Most of these hymns have amazing stories behind them. Whether you choose to use it like a devotional and read a short section each day, or read and read while the day passes you by, you will learn interesting stories about timeless hymns. Along with the hymns, you will learn about 12 hymn writers, singers, and composers. You may even find out about songs you are not familiar with and discover new treasures. I received this book as a part of the Tyndale Blog Network. My review is my own opinion.
