“My purpose in your life is not just to forgive your sins but also to give you more and more of myself,†Nancy Guthrie writes as if from God’s perspective in her book, Abundant Life in Jesus: Devotions for Every Day of the Year.
~ What ~
At three-hundred-and-eighty-four pages, this deep-red carved leather-like softbound book that is meant to be read daily throughout a year targets those wanting to focus on the blessings and inheritance of being a child of God. Using mainly the New Living Translation of the Holy Bible, also referenced are the ESV and NIV versions. A gold marker ribbon is attached, and a Scripture index completes the book.
Printed in a dark-red ink, each dated page of the year has a title, followed by a written-out Bible verse. Several paragraphs follow regarding the subject, written as if from God to the reader. The bottom of the page has a short one or two sentence prayer or thought to consider.
A few random subjects of daily reading include “I Grant Wisdom,†“I Am Jealous for You,†“I Forgive and Forget,†“I Will Reward You,†and “I Always Keep My Promises.â€
Reading the Word of God daily is important, and this devotional to be used with the Bible helps set the mind on God as the verse and the writer’s portrayal of God speaks to the reader. The pages remind to seek Christ first and look to Him for guidance and support.
~ Why Not ~
Those who do not read the Bible or prefer only to read God’s Word may not want to add this to their daily ritual. Not knowing all of the writer’s Biblical stances and beliefs, some may not agree with some of her portrayals of the Almighty.
~ Who ~
An international speaker, Guthrie has written numerous books. She and her husband are cohosts of GriefShare videos and host a Respite Retreat for couples.
~ Wish ~
Similar to Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling, this book is written as if God is writing. Leery having read Young’s introduction of receiving visions for her wording that made me stop reading it, I trust this book (which I have not read every page to date since reviewing) was done with prayer and preparation in the Word. I am thankful Guthrie’s introduction mentions its format is “only a device employed for the purpose of hearing him speak his blessing to you personally.†It would be thoughtful if all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.
~ Want ~
If you like devotionals that are presented as if God is speaking directly to you through the words, this is a viable option. It would make a lovely gift for that someone special in your life.
