Bible Promises for Parents of Children with Special Needs

Do you carry an incredible weight on your shoulders? Do you have days where you feel like you might break under the pressure of being a special needs parent? Do you lie awake at night with anxious thoughts or find yourself fretting about things beyond your control?

It’s amazing how stress can both paralyze you and keep you spinning. God’s promises are for times like these. He knows what you need before you ask. He will take care of you. God offers peace and rest. These aren’t just inspirational sayings–these are the forever promises God makes to those who trust him.

Fix your thoughts on who God is and on his promises. This allows his peace to settle your heart and mind and keep you from crumbling under the pressure.

 Woman Closes Eyes

When your mind is buzzing with worry . . .

Matthew 6:31-32 | Don’t worry about these things, saying, “What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?” These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.

Isaiah 26:3 | You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

When your child’s therapists or doctors pressure you to do more . . .

Psalm 55:22 | Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

When anxiety keeps you up at night . . .

Psalm 127:2 | It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working . . . for God gives rest to his loved ones.

Proverbs 3:21-22, 24 | My child, don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them, for they will refresh your soul. . . . You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly.

Girl Sad

When you struggle to cope with the weight of your child’s needs . . .

2 Corinthians 1:8-9 | We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.

Psalm 94:18-19 | I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.

Girl Covers Face

When your child’s needs feel like a tangled web of issues and you don’t know where to start unraveling them . . .

Isaiah 45:18 | The Lord is God, and he created the heavens and earth and put everything in place. He made the world to be lived in, not to be a place of empty chaos. “I am the Lord,” he says, “and there is no other.”

Psalm 86:7 | I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble, and you will answer me.

Psalm 37:23 | The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
