The Ties that Bind deals with some heavy subject matter in a way appropriate for older children. The theme of this 14 story collection is family and our culture's attack on the family. Whit is being pushed to promote the 'Let's Get Together' festival. A festival of tolerance and inclusivity of all types of families. Some of the kids are forced to write an essay on gender by a teacher who believes that gender is a decision on the part of each individual. Along with other plot lines they all tie in with our world's attack on families. The stories dealt with things that as an adult we see going on around us and sometimes have a hard time explaining to our children. I felt that the stories were presented in such a way that I could choose how deep I could go in our discussions of the subject matter. My younger children didn't need me to expound much on what they heard, but I had some very good discussions with my oldest. Focus on the Family also made a discussion guide with questions to discuss for each episode.
