The struggle is real. Kids are captivated by their screens, and the creators of online content are experts at capturing and holding their attention. We know that hours spent in front of a screen don’t bring lasting satisfaction; in fact, they can actually harm our children’s developing minds and hearts. But it’s exhausting to constantly fight to limit my kids' screen time.
As a parent and educator, I offer this advice: Provide and insist on alternatives. I suggest books as one of those alternatives. "But what if my tween doesn’t like to read?" The truth is, I wasn’t much of a reader myself until middle school, when a friend introduced me to a series of books I couldn’t put down. I eagerly awaited each new release!
Be selective. When it comes to books, there are fun and engaging options for tweens, but some content can be in opposition to our Christian faith. As a parent who cares deeply about my children’s emotional, mental, and spiritual development, I recommend the books on this list as engaging, age-appropriate, faith-based, and life-giving alternatives. Don’t give up on this worthy cause to keep your tween off the screen.
