Kid Talk Tuesday: What makes a real princess?

Princess Month continues this week with a guest post from Carolyn Larsen, author of Princess Stories and For Girls Only! Devotions .

When my two beautiful daughters were little girls they loved to be pretend princesses. They dressed up in gowns (the multitude of old bridesmaid gowns I kept), they had several tiaras and boas to choose from and they each ruled their toy room kingdoms quite royally.

Princesses are often a big part of little girls’ make believe. Have you ever wondered why? I thought about that once in a while as my little girls “became” princesses. I don’t claim to be an expert but some of what I saw in the play of my daughters and their friends helped me form a few ideas:

Princesses are considered important.
Princesses seem to have everything they want.
Princesses rule a kingdom.
Princesses are powerful.
Princesses are kind.
Princesses are beautiful.

That’s a short list but suffice it to say that princessdom is very attractive to little girls. As I began working on the Princess Stories: Real Bible Stories of God’s Princesses I considered these attributes and knew that it was important to teach little girls the characteristics of a real princess — God’s princess. After all, each little girl is a daughter of the true King and she has a presence in his kingdom. God gives each of his children a presence in his kingdom. Luke 12:32 “So don’t be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom.”

How we choose to live in the kingdom is a personal decision. But, I believe it’s very important for every little princess to learn early on how to be a princess who lives a life filled with love, compassion and generosity. She can live with power and strength because she knows she is a child of the King and he gives her these gifts.

In these days of gross bullying and the media shouting what it feels is of value, it’s more important than ever for little girls to have self-confidence and self-esteem. Encourage your little princess to learn from the examples of the princesses we are told about in the Bible. Encourage her to know her King so well that his characteristics grow into her heart and actions. Then she will live in the kingdom filled with love, compassion and honor to her King!
