Reflection #3

When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say, And she always says it kindly
Proverbs 31:26 The Message

What a needed reminder for all of us as we gathered for the weekend. What a needed reminder for me! My tongue tends to have a mind of its own and often my contributions to conversations are not wise or ultimately kind. I need a guard over my mouth that will keep unkind or unwise words from ever being spoken.

For 1997 I will pray over and meditate on Proverbs 31:26. I want my speech to be wise—sensible, showing sound judgment, having the right use of knowledge, discreet, discerning, having something worthwhile to say. I want my speech to be kind—considerate, thoughtful, tender, graceful, respectful, beneficial.

Scripture tells me that “the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.” (Matthew 12:34) My prayer for the year will be that I will choose to fill my heart with only those things that are true, pure, and wise. I will also pray that my abiding will be close and consistent so that the Lord is able to “check” me before speaking or that I will be sensitive to His correction when I have spoken unwisely.

I know that this is a lifetime project, but hopefully this will be a way of beginning to think before I speak and hopefully my family (especially my husband) and friends will enjoy being with me!

When she speaks her words are wise, And kindness is the rule for everything she says.
