Reflection #10

For whatever is in your heart determines what you say.
Matthew 12:34

I have just returned from attending a large convention. While there, I interacted with many different people and even had to participate in some interviews. My constant prayer was “Lord, please guard my mouth. Give me wisdom, help me to say the right things.”

There is nothing wrong with praying in this way, but what came to me is that it was a little presumptuous of me to be asking God for “instant” wisdom and a controlled tongue if this were not already, in some degree, a part of my life.

I am always challenged by Amy Carmichael’s words:

If a sudden jar can cause me to speak an impatient, unloving word, then I know nothing of Calvary love. For a cup brimful of sweet water cannot spill even one drop of bitter water however suddenly jolted.

The only way to know Calvary love is by consistently sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening to His words with a heart to obey. It takes time to know His love and to reflect His glory.

And all of us have had that veil removed so that we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more. 2 Corinthians 3:18

My worth to God in public is what I am in private. Oswald Chambers
