TYNDALE HOUSE PARTNERS WITH DUPAGE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Publisher Provides Grant and Employee Volunteer Building Days for Three-Year Initiative
Carol Stream, IL -- Tyndale House Publishers is pleased to announce a partnership with DuPage Habitat for Humanity and has committed to providing a $60,000 grant, plus an opportunity for employee volunteers to share in building a new housing project in the Pioneer Prairie neighborhood of West Chicago, Illinois.
Tyndale is one of several DuPage County businesses, civic organizations, and churches that are rallying behind DuPage Habit for Humanity’s new three-year initiative called “Pioneering Affordable Homeownership.” The project will respond directly to community leaders’ desire for affordable homes to be both available and attractive for local working families.
“I’m happy that Tyndale House is participating with Habit for Humanity—both with a financial commitment and with hands-on construction by our employees,” said Mark Taylor, President, Tyndale House Publishers. “This is one more way for us to contribute back to our local community.”
The Pioneer Prairie project will consist of eleven detached, single-family homes that are designed to be cost effective and environmentally efficient. In addition to these new homes, Habitat has identified seven existing homes in DuPage County for rehabilitation.
Groundbreaking for Pioneer Prairie is scheduled for June 24, 2009, and Tyndale employees will begin on-site volunteer work in August 2009.
DuPage Habitat Executive Director Sarah Brachle says, “Habitat for Humanity is now the tenth largest home builder in the world. Our model works because we engage the community in funding and building high-quality, low-frill homes for local working families. Through their financial and volunteer commitment, Tyndale has stepped forward in addressing this critical community need. We greatly appreciate their support and look forward to welcoming their employees out to the build site.”
DuPage Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habit for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Carol Stream, IL -- Tyndale House Publishers is privileged to announce plans to release an updated trade paper edition of Gracia Burnham’s best-selling memoir, In the Presence of My Enemies. Originally published by Tyndale in a hardcover edition in 2003, the book became a New York Times best seller and received the ECPA Gold Medallion Award in 2004. Tyndale plans an early 2010 release of the trade paper edition.
“Since we published the original hardcover edition, much has happened in the life of Gracia Burnham, including, most recently, special recognition from the United States government,” said Nancy Clausen, Marketing Director, Tyndale. “The new trade paper edition will share an amazing story of what has transpired in the Burnham family in the seven years since Martin and Gracia Burnham were in the national spotlight when kidnapped and held captive by terrorists in the jungles of the Philippines. Also included will be the account of Gracia Burnham’s brave return to the Philippines in 2004 where she risked her life to testify against her former captors.”
In May 2001, Mrs. Burnham and her husband, Martin, missionaries for more than 15 years with New Tribes Mission in the Philippines, were awakened by armed gunmen affiliated with the terrorist organization Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG). The Burnhams were among 20 hostages seized that morning and were held captive for more than a year. Throughout their terrifying ordeal, they exhibited remarkable strength and courage. On June 7, 2002, members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines found the terrorists’ encampment, and in the subsequent firefight, Mr. Burnham was killed, and Mrs. Burnham was shot in the leg; but she survived and was rescued. Since that time, she has dedicated herself to pursuing justice against the terrorists who held them captive.
In a recent ceremony in Washington, D.C., Attorney General Eric Holder presented Gracia Burnham with a Special Courage Award, recounting her efforts to protect victims’ rights. The ceremony was a prelude to the nation’s observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, April 26–May 2, 2009; nine other individuals and programs were also recognized for their service to crime victims.
“What a great honor to receive the Special Courage Award from the Department of Justice,” said Gracia Burnham. “I don’t think of myself as either courageous or worthy of this award, but I do feel that it is a gift from God and a gentle reminder that—even after seven years—we are not forgotten!”
In the Presence of My Enemies, the Burnhams’ remarkable story, was written by Gracia Burnham with Dean Merrill. The memoir was launched with an interview on Dateline NBC and other national media. More than 264,000 copies of the book are in print. In 2005, Tyndale House released To Fly Again: Surviving the Tailspins of Life, lessons on forgiveness and other spiritual truths that Gracia Burnham learned in the jungle as well as after her release. To Fly Again was also cowritten with Dean Merrill, and more than 50,000 copies are in print.
Gracia Burnham now lives in Kansas, and she frequently shares her unique story with churches, conferences, and schools. She established the Martin and Gracia Burnham Foundation to support missionary aviation, tribal missions, the persecuted church, and ministry to Muslims. Gracia’s older son, Jeff, is now married and living in Lynchburg, Va., where he is completing his studies in missionary aviation at Liberty University. Daughter Mindy has graduated from high school and is attending New Tribes Bible Institute in Wisconsin. Son Zach will graduate from high school in May 2009 and is looking forward to what God has in his future.
