Dungy Media Tour - Days 3 & 4
January 30 (Tampa)
2:45 AM ET

It’s day three of the Tony Dungy Uncommon media tour. We just got in to Tampa from Newark and we’re going to try and catch a few hours of sleep before our 4:45 AM wake-up call so we can head to the Tampa Convention Center for a FOX & Friends interview (7:35 AM hit time).

Today (well, yesterday) was another successful day. Some of the highlights were the 30-minute radio interview with Rush Limbaugh, who has the #1 radio talk show in the country.

In the afternoon, we taped a segment for David Letterman which aired later that night. When Tony stepped out of the car, he was greeted by about 75 paparazzi that were also waiting for Renee Zellweger and Graham Nash, Letterman’s other guests for the day.

Right after Letterman, we headed to the airport for our 8:30 flight. We’re obviously tired, but excited because all our hard work is paying off. (Uncommon is currently the #9 ranked book on Amazon and #4 on Barnes & Noble)

Dungy Media Tour - Day 2
Wednesday, January 28, 2009
11:30 pm - Manhattan

It was another long but productive day on the Tony Dungy Uncommon book tour. The day began leaving the hotel at 5:45 am to go to Good Day New York on the local NYC FOX affiliate. Coach Dungy also called into ESPN's Mike & Mike in the Morning from a phone at the television studios.

After a short break we drove to the FOX News studios and Tony conducted a rather lengthy interview that was distributed to the nearly 700 radio affiliates on the FOX radio network. While we were there, Jessica Quinn was able to book Coach Dungy on Shepard Smith's Studio B show for tomorrow afternoon.

Remarkably, we actually found time to eat lunch today. We were even joined by my sister, Lori Antolick, who is an attorney and had a hearing in Manhattan this morning.

Upon leaving lunch we went to a Barnes & Noble store in Tribeca for a book signing. It wasn't a huge crowd but it was fairly steady. We had snow in the morning that turned to rain so it was a slushy, icky mess. A number of people called into the store have Tony sign books that they would pick up a later date.

Another book signing followed at Last Licks, an ice cream and memorabilia shop operated by Steiner Sports, in Manhattan. Tony's attorney joined us for dinner before arriving back at the hotel at 11:00 pm.

We feel like the book is off to a solid start, with rankings this hour of 31 on Amazon and 20 on B&N.com. We were also informed that the New York Times is now tracking Uncommon for inclusion in its bestsellers list, which we will find out one week from today.

Thursday will be a big day with a pre-interview with the Letterman folks at 8:20, followed by a variety of interviews including Laura Ingraham, Michael Medved, and Rush Limbaugh. Later in the afternoon we are scheduled for Shepard Smith's show on FOX, Late Show with David Letterman, and a show on the FOX business channel. We then fly to Tampa.

Time to return emails and try to get a few hours of sleep.

Dungy Media Tour - Day 1
12:40 am ET (Manhattan) - update from Todd Starowitz, Tony's book publicist along with Jessica Quinn

Our first day of the Tony Dungy Uncommon book tour has reached an end, although I think the days never really end as we leave the hotel later this morning for Good Day New York.

We returned to the hotel at nearly midnight after Coach Dungy concluded interviews wth On the Record with Greta Van Susteren, as well as Alan Colmes's radio show. I think that Coach Dungy may be about the only person in the world that can be on a show with a liberal like Alan Colmes, and then this Thursday be on Rush Limbaugh's show. Tony's appeal and message certainly has the ability to cross party lines. Rush plugged Uncommon on his show today and promoted Thursday's interview.

We had a great signing at BookEnds tonight. We had a very nice turnout and sold nearly 250 books, according to store owner Walter Boyer. Not bad when the PR for the book really just started today, a snow storm is brewing, and it was a school night. It really encourages us fot the turnout we may see in Indiana and Tampa.

It seems almost amazing that Coach Dungy interviewed with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America yesterday morning. It seems as if it has already been three days. Robin does such a great job and there was a lot of positive feedback about the interview.

The book as I get ready to go and try to get four hours sleep is No. 31 on Amazon. That's not a bad start. The top 10 may be attainable.

One of the most difficult things for Jessica Quinn (Tony's other book publicist) and me to handle is trying to keep up with all of the media requests. We are on our smart phones returning emails but it is tough to get back to everyone in a timely manner. I just got through an hour of emails and I still am not through all of them. The next toughest thing is trying to find any available space in the schedule to fit in these requests.

Tomorrow (today I guess now that it is 1:00 am) should be interesting with two book signings and interviews such as ESPN's Mike and Mike. Thursday we look forward to Rush and Letterman.Calling it a night.

Dungy’s memoir, Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life, rocketed to the top spot on the New York Times Best Sellers List in August 2007, and more importantly, impacted countless lives. With more than 1,000,000 copies sold, Quiet Strength is one of the best-selling sports-related titles in history.

In addition to the success of Dungy’s Quiet Strength, Tyndale House Publishers recently had another football-related hit on its hands with Don’t Bet Against Me!, the memoir of Deanna Favre, wife of NFL great Brett Favre. Her book spent 10 consecutive weeks on either the New York Times hardcover nonfiction primary list (top 15) or expanded list (top 35). More than 200,000 copies of the book are now in print, and it is now in its eighth printing. Tyndale released The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life by Ohio State University football coach Jim Tressel last July, and the book spent eight consecutive weeks on the Times’s “Advice, How-To, and Miscellaneous” list (either primary or expanded), reaching as high as No. 3. Tyndale also released Atlanta Falcons placekicker Jason Elam’s Monday Night Jihad in 2007, followed by Blown Coverage, his second novel, which released this month.

Tyndale House Publishers was founded in 1962 by Dr. Kenneth N. Taylor as a means of publishing The Living Bible. It is now one of the premier publishing houses in the industry. Tyndale products include numerous New York Times best sellers, including the popular Left Behind series. Tyndale also publishes the Holy Bible, New Living Translation, and many other resources for church and family. Tyndale House Publishers is located in Carol Stream, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago.

The Author is represented by the literary agency of Legacy, LLC, Winter Park, Florida.

From the Chicago Tribune: Ex-Colts coach Tony Dungy left speechless by Barack Obama's inauguration
Check out this great article by David Haugh at the Chicago Tribune about Tony Dungy, the inauguration and Uncommon, Tony's new book which releases this Tuesday.

Words usually come easily to the eloquent Tony Dungy. But the recently retired Indianapolis Colts coach who has written three books and changed lives with a career's worth of locker-room speeches struggled to articulate his experience Tuesday in Washington.

After taking the train in from a friend's home in Maryland, Dungy sat 40 rows from the spot at the U.S. Capitol where President Obama was inaugurated. The man who made NFL history in 2007 when he became the only African-American coach to win a Super Bowl watched in awe as the country marked a victory he believes no scoreboard could measure.

"Seeing how our country was moved … I … just don't know how to describe it," Dungy said Wednesday on the phone.

What Dungy saw as he peered over the estimated crowd of 2 million on the National Mall took his mind back to a day in 1963. In the same spot, on a similar stage, another African-American agent of change, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech that echoed inside Dungy's head as he waited for Obama to speak.

Dungy, ever humble, couldn't think of anything he accomplished as a player or coach that stirred the depth of his emotions.

"I can say from experience that winning the Super Bowl was great and I know how it impacted so many people, but there's not even a comparison with the inauguration and that feeling I had," Dungy said. "What President Obama is doing is on such a different level than what I did."

That doesn't mean Dungy didn't see social symmetry between Obama taking the presidential oath in the same week Steelers coach Mike Tomlin became the third African-American to lead a team to the Super Bowl. In fact, Dungy drew parallels that represent the overall theme of his third book, "Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance," which Tyndale House Publishers will release Tuesday.

"I look at Barack Obama saying I can be president or Mike Tomlin saying I can be an NFL head coach and those guys both said, 'I'm not going to follow the crowd,' " Dungy said.

"That's the message of the book. It's really directed at young men, telling them too many people are channeled by the conformity of society."

Tomlin's individuality always appealed to Dungy, who gave him his first NFL job on his Tampa Bay staff in 2001. When the Steelers took a risk in hiring Tomlin as their head coach two years ago when he was just 34, they used Dungy's recommendation to help justify their decision. That makes it easy to guess whom the former Steeler (1977-78) will be pulling for in Super Bowl XLIII.

"I'm so close with Mike, and my Steeler background makes it a no-brainer," Dungy said.

The reality of retirement hit Dungy last week when he pulled into the Colts' complex in Indianapolis to pick up some things and "somebody else's name was on my parking spot," he said.

He will take another six weeks to decide what's next for him, and looks forward to visiting coaching protégés around the league such as Bears coach Lovie Smith and new hire Rod Marinelli.

"Rod went through a lot [going 0-16] in Detroit and taught us what being a man was all about and what being a coach was all about," Dungy said.

Dungy always will remember Tuesday for reminding him what he believes being an American is about.

TYNDALE SHIPPING TONY DUNGY’S UNCOMMON EARLY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TYNDALE SHIPPING TONY DUNGY’S UNCOMMON EARLY

Publisher Responds to Wave of Publicity following Coach’s Retirement Announcement

Carol Stream, IL – In response to the announcement last week from Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy that he is retiring, Tyndale House Publishers will ship Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance, Dungy’s highly anticipated new book and audiobook, earlier than the original street date of February 17. Tyndale is changing the release time frame to a street date of Tuesday, January 27.

“We had to reevaluate the retail on-sale date after Tony Dungy’s retirement announcement last Monday,” says Doug Knox, publisher for the book. “We knew it would create challenges for us and our retailers, but the response from the media and public has been very strong, and we needed to make it possible for our retail partners to respond to the public’s desire for the new book. We have rushed back to press for a third printing of Uncommon and another printing of Quiet Strength to meet demand.”

Dungy will be doing a variety of major broadcast and print interviews throughout the week preceding Super Bowl XLIII, which will be played in Tampa on Sunday, February 1. The book is currently shipping from Tyndale’s warehouse as well as directly from the printer; the goal is to have it on sale in all stores by January 27.

“Coach Dungy’s retirement is generating a sudden and significant wave of publicity,” says Dave Endrody, Tyndale’s Vice President of Sales. “We felt that this more flexible guideline for placement was the best way to help our store partners respond to customers who will be looking to purchase Uncommon.”

Partnering again with Quiet Strength coauthor Nathan Whitaker in Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance (Tyndale House Publishers—January 27, 2009), Dungy will challenge his readers to “Dare to Be Uncommon™.” Tyndale is supporting the release—and Dungy’s uncommon vision—with a $500,000 marketing campaign.

Uncommon reveals lessons for achieving significance that Dungy learned from his remarkable parents, his athletic and coaching careers, his mentors, and his journey with God. The book particularly focuses on what it means to be a man of significance in a culture that is offering young men few positive role models. “Our young men today are falling into a trap,” says Dungy. “Society is telling them material success is what's important, but if we buy into that idea, we can spend a lifetime chasing that success and never really have the positive impact on people that would make our lives truly significant.”

Uncommon offers its readers insight into the daily decisions that lead to an extraordinary lifetime, personal stories from inside the NFL, leadership insights from a championship coach, and unique approaches to mentoring and leading men.

Dungy’s memoir, Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life, rocketed to the top spot on the New York Times Best Sellers List in August 2007, and more importantly, impacted countless lives. Dungy's Retirement Moves Up "Uncommon" Release Date
At the end of last week, we announced that Tony Dungy's upcoming book, Uncommon, will now be released on January 27, 2009.

Here's an article about it in Christian Retailing online.

Tyndale House Publishers has moved up the street date of the latest book by Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungy after he announced his retirement from the Indianapolis Colts earlier this week.

Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance—the follow-up to The New York Times best-seller Quiet Strength, published by Tyndale in 2007—was scheduled to come out Feb. 17. Instead, Tyndale will roll out 250,000 copies of Uncommon—to feature Dungy's "legacy" message—Jan. 27.

"Since (Dungy) has been very open about the fact that he would be re-evaluating his status at the end of the Colts' season—as he's done the past few years—we were prepared for the possibility that he would retire," Tyndale Associate Publisher Janis Long Harris told Christian Retailing.

Dungy, 53, retired Monday after a 31-year NFL career, becoming the first black coach to win a Super Bowl after guiding Indianapolis to victory against the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI to close the 2006 season.

"Coach will start doing interviews a little sooner than originally planned, so he can be responsive to media that are calling in the wake of his retirement announcement," said Harris, noting that Dungy will begin promoting the book Jan. 27. "Coach Dungy's decision to retire from a successful career in football at a relatively young age just reinforces the message of his book—that a life of true significance sometimes requires uncommon decisions and actions."

As with Dungy's memoir, Tyndale will support Uncommon with a $500,000 marketing campaign. With more than a million copies sold, Quiet Strength is one of the best-selling, sports-related titles in history, Tyndale officials said.

Tony Dungy is Just Uncommon
Yesterday, Indianapolis Colts Coach Tony Dungy announced his retirement. Although known as a great football coach, Dungy also leaves a legacy of being "uncommon." This article from the Minneapolis Star Tribune, "Tony Dungy: Uncommon decency," reflects on Dungy's uncommon character and the impact it has made on many--especially his players.

Star Tribune columnist Jim Souhan writes, "How often do we see a coach of Dungy's success and stature leave the job on his own terms, dignity intact, soaking in admiration from every corner of the country and every profession entwined with his?

Maybe never, before now.

The most successful NFL head coaches tend to believe they're Pattons in headsets. They win championships and earn the admiration of those closest to them, but they usually succeed either in spite of or because of a God complex. They leave bodies and careers strewn in their wake.
I got to know Dungy when he worked for the Vikings, when he found a way to produce spectacular results while earning the admiration, even the love, of his players.

Football historians will remember Dungy for breaking a racial barrier. Those who know Dungy prefer to think of him as unique in another way.

People performed for Dungy because they admired him. They never wanted to disappoint such a charismatic and decent man."

It is only fitting, then, that Tony Dungy's second book, Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance, is releasing next month. Not only is Dungy uncommon, but he is encouraging the rest of us to be uncommon as well. It takes a lot of strength and courage to stand against the grain--let's follow Dungy's example and become uncommon people. The world will notice and wonder why.
