Good Guy of the Week: Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner
Here's a heartwarming story about Kurt Warner that was published last week in the New York Times by Karen Crouse. Before every away game, Warner and his wife Brenda allow one of their children to pick out a family in a restaurant. Then anonymously, Warner informs the wait staff that he'd like the dinner tab of that family of strangers added to his.
Warner says, "We want our kids to grow up knowing that because of football we are so blessed." Although the article doesn't mention it, Warner constantly speaks of his faith, which is no doubt, another part of the reason why he genuinely wants to share his blessings with others.
Why do People Like Palin Biography? For One, It's Short
Here is an article from the Anchorage Daily News about Sarah Palin's biography, Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned the Political Establishment Upside Down. Read the entire article here: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/52851.html
Last week, a judge ruled in favor of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling in her copyright infringement lawsuit against Steve Vander Ark, a fan and website operator that was going to publish the “Harry Potter Lexicon” based off of the popular book series and his fan site. An article in the Detroit Free Press this week says that even after the judged ruled against him, Vander Ark is still determined to publish a book version of the popular Harry Potter Lexicon website.
As a writer myself, I can sympathize with Rowling. It takes a lot of time—years even--and effort to come up with your own original ideas (especially for a work of fiction) and it’s obvious that Vander Ark is trying to make some money by playing off the Harry Potter craze in this case.
In a statement, Rowling said, “The proposed book took an enormous amount of my work and added virtually no original commentary of its own…Many books have been published which offer original insights into the world of Harry Potter. The Lexicon is just not one of them.” (source: Chicago Tribune)
This month Tyndale published a book by the “Hogwarts Professor” John Granger called How Harry Cast His Spell: The Meaning Behind the Mania for J.K. Rowling’s Bestselling Books. Granger has written several books about Christian themes in Harry Potter and is one of the many books that offers “original insights into the world of Harry Potter.”
In an effort to explain why Harry Potter is so popular, Granger traces spiritual content and symbols throughout the entire series and uses his knowledge of classical literature, philosophy, and Christian tradition to explain why the books meet some of our deepest needs and longings. It’s ironic to think that so many Christians are against the Harry Potter series when Granger argues that it is the Christian themes within the books that draw people to them.

Tyndale To Distribute Palin Bio for Epicenter By Rachel Deahl -- Publishers Weekly, 9/8/2008 2:42:00 PM
After scrambling to meet the overwhelming demand for its Sarah Palin biography, SARAH: How a Hockey Mom Turned the Political Establishment Upside Down, indie Epicenter Press has signed an exclusive distribution deal with Tyndale House. Tyndale has gone to press for 250,000 copies of the paperback about the newly minted Republican vice-presidential candidate and will begin shipping the books on September 10.
Kent Sturgis, publisher of Epicenter, who had been printing through Ligthning Source and distributing through Graphic Arts/Ingram Publisher Services, said he received a handful of distribution offers from other houses but that Tyndale's was "a no-brainer for us." After printing the book in small quantities--Epicenter has shipped roughly 60,000 copies of the title since John McCain named Palin as his running mate--Sturgis said the deal with Tyndale will give the book significantly wider distribution. "This will help us get to the next level," he told PW, adding that the Tyndale deal will also "reduce our exposure and risk to almost nothing."
A representative at Tyndale said the publisher had been "working with the idea" of a book on Palin before McCain selected her as his running mate. Now, although the Christian publisher is happy to be distributing a book about "a professing Christian," Tyndale president Mark Taylor said the deal is not about politics. "Tyndale House does not endorse political candidates or parties," he said. Instead, he said, "as a distinctively Christian publisher, we believe it is vital to promote clear thinking and thoughtful conversation about the intersection of faith and the public square."
Sturgis, who signed the deal with Tyndale on Friday, will now be handling special sales on the hardcover edition of the book, which sold about 10,000 copies when it first came out in April. Sturgis has just gone back to press on the hardcover and estimates printing in the "tens of thousands" of copies of that edition.

Tyndale’s first print run will be 250,000 copies, and orders are being accepted now. We’re delighted to be able to work with Epicenter Press to expand distribution of this informative resource.”

Everyone knows Indianapolis Colts' coach Tony Dungy has a big heart. This was exemplified when he went out of his way to visit a 15-year-old boy for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, not just one, but three times. He even brought his family to meet and love this child. Dinesh D’Souza, a new Tyndale author, wrote this article called “Talk vs. Action: Obama vs. Palin” for the National Review Online. With Sarah Palin’s speech tonight at the Republican National Convention, some of you might be interested in D’Souza’s response to some of the criticisms surrounding Palin. Tyndale is publishing the softcover of D’Souza’s bestselling book What’s So Great About Christianity? this November.
Joel Rosenberg, author of Epicenter 2.0 and Dead Heat will also be on Glenn Beck TV tonight to discuss the election and if Barack is ready to lead.
I am hopeful that everyone had an enjoyable holiday weekend. There is certainly a lot going on between major hurricanes, political conventions, and the kickoff of the college football season. At Tyndale, we are preparing for our sales conference this week where we will get a look at what titles we will be releasing this spring. I’ll fill you in on the highlights later this week.
Congrats to Jim Tressel, author of The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life, who led the Ohio State Buckeyes to a season-opening 43-0 win over his former school, Youngstown State. I’m sure Coach Tressel may not be sleeping quite as well at night as his star running back and Heisman Trophy candidate Beanie Wells left the game early in the third quarter with a foot injury. He is unlikely to play this Saturday against Ohio University.
While trying to not get too political, it is always kind of the elephant in the room at this time of the year and it is tough to avoid. Because he is a Tyndale author, I’m going to post Dr. James C. Dobson’s statement about Bristol Palin. Dr. Dobson issued the following statement:
"In the 32-year history of Focus on the Family, we have offered prayer, counseling and resource assistance to tens of thousands of parents and children in the same situation the Palins are now facing. We have always encouraged the parents to love and support their children and always advised the girls to see their pregnancies through, even though there will of course be challenges along the way. That is what the Palins are doing, and they should be commended once again for not just talking about their pro-life and pro-family values, but living them out even in the midst of trying circumstances.
"Being a Christian does not mean you're perfect. Nor does it mean your children are perfect. But it does mean there is forgiveness and restoration when we confess our imperfections to the Lord. I've been the beneficiary of that forgiveness and restoration in my own life countless times, as I'm sure the Palins have.
"The media are already trying to spin this as evidence Gov. Palin is a 'hypocrite,' but all it really means is that she and her family are human. They are in my prayers and those of millions of Americans."
I loved Dr. Dobson’s statement that “being a Christian does not mean you’re perfect.” We all sin and make mistakes. It doesn’t mean that we don’t want to do the right thing and do our very best to live in a Godly manner. Dr. Dobson’s son, Ryan Dobson (http://www.tyndale.com/authors/authorbio.asp?id=773) is the author of Wrecked, which begs the question: Have you ever looked at your life and wondered, How did I end up here? Here is more about Ryan’s new book: http://www.tyndale.com/products/nonfiction/details.asp?isbn=978-1-4143-1709-0&subpage= I think Ryan can relate pretty well to Bristol Palin as it couldn’t have been easy being the child of Dr. James Dobson.
